Workshop 2: Creativity in Asia: challenges and learning points.

Professor AI Girl Tan, Psychological Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Biography:

Ai-Girl Tan received her graduate education in Japan (1987-91, Tokyo Kogyo Daigaku), and Germany (1991-95, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet, LMU). During her graduate years, she was a scholar of the Iwatani Foundation (Japan) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Her recent achievements include the release of the handbook of creativity for teachers (2007), the inauguration of the psychological studies graduate symposiums and colloquiums (NTU, 2006-07), the creativity and talent development conference cum workshop (LMU, 2008, chair), the international symposium on “Toward the European Year of Creativity and Innovation” (Italy, 2008, co-chair), as well as graduate, research, and education exhibition (LMU, 2009, chair). She was a visiting professor of the Department of Psychology, Ludwig-Maximilians Universitaet Germany (April 2008-March 2009), and is a thesis supervision of the Psychology of Excellence Study Program of the same department (2008-2010).

Abstract:

This workshop on creativity highlights the meta-aspect of creativity which includes (1) Social importance of creativity: creativity is a prerequisite of innovation, invention, discovery and others. (2) Personal importance of creativity: creativity is a potential in every person. (3) Cultural importance of creativity: over-generational effects and sustainable variations of every culture. The participants will join in a reflective journey on creativity from 1950 to today. They shall be actively engaged in discussing their conceptions of creativity. In addition, they will be exposed to selected creativity frameworks, creativity techniques, and research findings.
Professor Tan’s research and teaching experiences on creativity in Asia and other parts of the world will be shared in the workshop.
