Abstract:

Interculturality is not the domination of one culture over the other, nor does it imply the homogenizing of different cultures to reconstitute one global culture. Interculturality points to a diversity of cultures where each culture is open to the richness of the other cultures and at the same time respects their “opacity” and their differences. In other words, “interculturality” is a delicate balance between cultural identity and openness to change. It could be considered as a constant drift of identity between one’s root culture and other surrounding cultures; a ceaseless quest of assimilation of the “other”.
The art of dancing, just as any other form of art, reflects the mind and the ethos of the people who have conceived it. Thus by analyzing the art of dancing and more particularly the “Kathak” dance, this presentation aims at giving you an overview of Indian interculturality.
